Eight to Nine Months

Here's my dirty little secret about scrapbooking: I don't scrapbook chronologically, and consequently I have lots of finished pages but no finished album after 2008. TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHT. Feeling sorta funny about this, I decided to target completion of the 2009 pages this year so I can bring myself into the right decade.

I think one reason I've put this off is the sheer intimidation of it. My older son was born in mid-2008, and there are so many baby pictures. The task of sorting through them, selecting the ones to place in an album, then simply getting it done, seemed overwhelming. But I've struck on some strategies to help get through it.

First, I print all the pictures as collage pictures. Why? There's no way I can scrap them all as regular sized prints. The albums would be gargantuan. And there would be so many pages to make I'd likely never finish.

Second, I work one month at a time, and if I can fit one month into a two-page layout, I do. Exceptions are made for holidays and special events, and non-kid pages, of course.

Third, I love kits. They take some of the thinking out of finding things that coordinate and they push me to try products I wouldn't otherwise try. I often mix things from different kits or from non-kit supplies, and I often make pages without using kits at all. But having them helps when you want the help or don't have time to go shop for your own supplies.

Yet still, sometimes a page just hangs me up, as was the case with the 8-9 month pictures of my sweet boy. In such occasions, I turn to another trusted source of help: sketches. This page came together using help from Stuck?! Sketches, January 2016 sketch. Thank you!!

The paper from this came from My Mind's Eye's "Twinkle Twinkle Little Boy" pad, which I've had for a few years. Honestly, the background paper isn't my favorite, but the little boy in the pictures, who is now 7, insisted I use it. Ultimately I like how the page came together, so I'll happily and thankfully credit him with getting me to use it. The round dimensional dot embellishments came from an old Making Memories "little kids" mini-pack, and the other embellishments came from a Heidi Grace baby pack I got a few years ago. The alphas, bird stamp, and round card its stamped on all came from a kit. I made the star using my Silhouette, and inked the edge with a brown ink pad.

Creative Scrappers Sketch #284

I can't believe it's been 3 years since I updated this blog! Certainly I have scrapbooked since then, but it's possible, I suppose, that I haven't done a sketch challenge in that long. In the last week, I've made 4 pages, including this one. I've enjoyed it so much. For about a year, our office area was more or less unusable due to renovations happening around it. Just recently, we've gotten it put together enough to use, and I'm loving having a dedicated crafting space again.

Without further ado, here's my layout. I made this using Making Memories papers: Vintage Findings "Text Dot Findings" and Noel "Words Noel". I primarily used the b-sides of each sheet. The small "wedding" letters are from a Studio Calico kit I got who knows when.

Thanks, Creative Scrappers, for the sketch. It was ideal for the photos I had for this page. Thanks for the inspiration!

And the left side

When I made the right side of the two page layout for my son's baptism, I had a sketch in mind for the left side. Then the new Sketchy Thursdays sketch came out (9/29/11 sketch) and I felt like it worked better, so I changed my plans and made it happen. I'm really happy with how it came out! The pages can stand alone, but coordinate easily as a two page summary of the event. Here is the left side, which uses this week's sketch:

Like last week, I made this with remnants from two Lucky Girl Crafts kits (November 2010 and March 2011). It also made me pretty happy to work the brown ribbon into the mix.

Here are the two pages together, as they will appear in the album. They weren't made to be one cohesive layout, but to coordinate and clearly belong together. I wanted something simple and full of light, like the event itself.

A Simple Page, Sketchy Thursdays 9/22

I printed a bunch of pictures a while ago and had one event left from that batch of prints. I love these pictures, from my son's baptism in 2008 (yes, old, I realize). I had enough pictures for a two page layout, so I picked two sketches and figured out how to make them work together. Today's post is the right hand side of the two-page sketch. I made this using Sketchy Thurdays 9/22/11 sketch, which you can find here.

My picture was taken on a very gray day, so I apologize for the blurriness around the edges.

I made this using an ivory American Crafts textured cardstock for the background, and scraps from two Lucky Girl Crafts kits (last November and March, I believe). Once I had the color palette down and an idea how to make the pages work together, it came together pretty quickly!

Pumpkin Pie

It's rare for me to have a single-photo layout, but I did and this week's Sketchy Thursdays sketch (here) was perfect for it.* This layout was finished start to finish in under 2 hours, which isn't a record but still counts as fairly efficient for me. And what is it? It's all about pie. Luscious, beautiful, homemade pumpkin pie.

The Race I Loved

Although I did so some work today, I had decided to take part of it off as a mental health day before things get really crazy again here in a few weeks. Last night I had started this page, so I decided to finish it this afternoon. I have to tell you, this was a lot of fun to finish. These pictures are from a trip to Detroit that I (and my son) took in early April. We had a blast and I've really been looking forward to scrapping the pictures. I even ventured into misting for the very first time on my own.

I had two great sources of motivation for this. First, this week's Sketchy Thursdays sketch (here). Second, the orange and pink paper strips (but not the wider orange ribbon) were already adhered to the pink background paper from a class I took at CKC. The barely-started page had been sitting in a drawer waiting for pictures and a vision to do something with it. The sketch was just what I needed to make it happen.

Christmas in July

I finished up this page while listening to all the firecrackers and related paraphernalia being set off throughout my neighborhood. It felt kind of strange, but mostly just made me smile. I made this page using the left side of the 6/30/11 Sketchy Thursdays sketch (found here) and my December kit from Lucky Girl Crafts paired with a few extra supplies I had on hand. I had a lot of fun making this. It came together quickly, I think because I'd had it in my mind for so long.
